FREE User Guides!

Have you ever needed a manual for your device but didn’t know where to find one? Great news! It’s been right in your device all along for 🌟 FREE!! 🌟

If you use the iBooks app already, then you are one step of ahead of us!  If you don’t use the app, you’ll need to find it by searching your device.  From any screen on your device, pull down and the Search bar will appear at the top of the screen.  Type in iBooks and the app will appear as shown below.

Finding Your Device User Guide

First things first.  To find the FREE user guide for your specific device, you’ll need to check in Settings for the version of iOS software your device is currently using.  If you need help with with Settings, review my earlier post here Settings = Information.  Once in Settings, go to Software Update and you’ll see the current version of your software.  For example, mine says “iOS 11.4 Your software is up to date”.  You’ll need this information to choose the correct user guide.

For guidelines on updating your software, I recently posted information and you can check it out using this link General Tips: Software Updates, WAIT!

Let’s Open the iBooks App

Tap on the iBooks app to open and go to bottom of screen.  You need to look for one of the following:   Featured, Top Charts, or Search.  There may be other options based on what device you are using.

Now you should type in the Search bar, the type of device:  (iPhone, iPad) user guide for iOS (list version number).  As you enter this information, guides will start showing up in your screen.  You can tap on your device at anytime.

Free or Paid Version

The user guides are in the iTunes library on your device.  You’ll find lots of information here to buy or choose for free, including other books and audiobooks.  Browse around to see what you can find.

One quick tip, if you want to buy something but don’t want to put a credit card on your iTunes account, buy an iTunes gift card and add to your account.  You can find more on this topic in the user guide 😊

Purchasing Your User Guide”

The user guide with “GET” to the right of the title is free.  These are the official Apple User Guides for your device.  You will use the same steps to “purchase” a free version as a paid version of anything in iTunes.

You tap on “GET” next to your device/version and the guide begins to download to your device.  Use either Touch ID (your fingerprint) or enter your password to authorize the download to your device.

Wondering about Touch ID, that will be in another post soon!

Opening the User Guide

Once it’s complete “GET” will say “READ”.   The front page of the guide will show and then you will need to choose your device.  DON’T skip this step of choosing your device.  If you were to select iPhone 6s instead of your iPhone 8+ there are many differences in how the phone functions.

You’ll swipe left to begin reading all the directions you ever wanted!  Ok, I admit I think it’s a good thing to read directions 😂 even though my son often says, why do you need to read the directions mom? 🤦🏻‍♀️  Not always, but I still like to have the guide just in case.

What’s Next?

Need to take a quick note, or write down a phone number and name? The Notes app already installed on your device when you purchase it (this is called a “native” app) is the perfect solution!  It’s a hidden gem on your iPhone and iPad.  We’ll review some ways to use the app to make your life easier.
